Why does Macbeth change so dramatically over the course of the play?
Macbeth transforms to an evil character due to authority and characters related to him.
Lady Macbeth , Witches, Power
- Lady Macbeth: Lady Macbeth was the one who wanted the power so much that she ordered her husband to go kill the present king in order to become the king and the queen. Lady Macbeth convinced Macbeth to kill the king and this is one of the reasons why he became evil.
Lines 42~45 (1.7): This is where Lady Macbeth talks back to Macbeth when he says that he will not do it. Lady Macbeth makes a good point saying are you going to be a coward saying I can't over I want to? or do you want to have what you want to have? This shows that Lady Macbeth is trying to convince Macbeth to kill the king to get the king's position.
Lines 60~72 (1.7): This is where Lady Macbeth says that they will never fail. Macbeth is afraid about failing and says "If we should fail?" and Lady Macbeth talks back strongly that they will never fail. She explains what's going to happen and therefore nothing would go wrong, which mad Macbeth think that it would be all good. She says that she will make the servants drunk and when they get caught they could blame the drunk servants.
- The three Witches: At the beginning of the play, the three witches tell Macbeth that he is going to become the king. This influences Macbeth because this makes him want more and think that he might become the king. When people hear something is good is going to happen to them, people tend to expect it.
Lines 49 ~ 51 (1.3): "All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of Glamis! All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of Cawdor! All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!"
- Power: The main reason why Macbeth changes through out the novel is because he wants the power. He wants the power so badly that he kills the king and when he has the power, he kills other people so that he can keep his authority.
